Northwood Music
Consort Music for Viols

George Hunter, the founder of Northwood Music, passed away March 26, 2011 after a long and productive life. He was born in Columbus Ohio in 1918, attended Ohio State University and then Indiana University where he received his B.A. in music in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1946 and was stationed in Georgia where he attained the rank of Warrant Officer and also served as band leader on the base. After his discharge from the Army in spring of 1946, Hunter studied fugue and harpsichord with Erwin Bodky at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge MA. He received his M.A. in 1948 from Yale University where he studied composition with Paul Hindemith and harpsichord with Ralph Kirkpatrick.

From 1948 to 1981, Hunter taught at the University of Illinois in Urbana. His field was early music but he also taught music theory and history. In 1951, the Collegium Musicum of the University of Illinois was formed under Hunter's direction. The group performed and toured widely over the following 15 years. The U. of I. Chamber Choir, which specialized in performance of early music was another project initiated by Hunter during the 1960s and 1970s.

In the years prior to his retirement, Hunter started editing the viol consort music which would eventually become the catalog of works offered by Northwood Music. Over the next 25 years, he brought into print a total of 33 editions most of which are still in print.

My sisters and I feel that the best way we can honor the memory of George is to do everything possible to keep the Northwood catalog available to viol players for the foreseeable future. I have therefore passed the torch to Charlie Ogle and Boulder Early Music effective July 1st, 2011. Please contact BEMS as below for orders after that date.

  • Format. I spend a lot of time on the appearance of the music: spacing of the notes etc. to make the music attractive to the eye and easy to read.
  • The editions are "scholarly"; i.e. I compare all of the surviving manuscript sources and report the significant variants among those sources for the benefit of the performer who may wish to see what the editor has considered in making his choices among the various readings found in the manuscripts.
  • The Northwood catalog contains some of the finest music in the consort repertory by the greatest English composers of the time. When I founded Northwood Music the music of such composers as Purcell, Byrd, Gibbons, Ward, and numerous others was simply not available in decent editions so I had the opportunity to present the complete viol consort works of Purcell, Byrd, and Gibbons.
  • Northwood editions range from duos to six part music. In keeping with my goal of making this music easily accessable to anyone interested, I strive to keep prices as low as possible while still covering my expenses and believe these editions offer excellent value to musicians.
  • As of 2009 my three daughters – Katie, Rebecca, and Rachel – are helping me to run Northwood Music. They are the main contacts at this point, and I hope you will enjoy working with them!
